Mother Sends Message to Others

A second baby has died in Peoria in just two days and both slept with parents.

The Peoria County Coroner says 3-month-old Zoey Adams was pronounced dead just after five Thursday morning at her home.

Wednesday morning 29-day-old Glen Cheney was pronounced dead just after 9 a.m.

Both babies were found laying unresponsive in their parent's beds.

19–year–old Annette Cheney says she awoke to a nightmare Wednesday.

"I heard my mom saying the baby isn't breathing, I jumped out of bed and called 911," said Cheney.

Cheney says she fell asleep watching TV with her infant son Glen and when she woke up, he wasn't breathing.

"I didn't roll over on him, he was three feet away from me, I made sure there was no pillows or nothing, he was just in his blanket," she said.

The infant was transported to the Children's Hospital of Illinois where he was pronounced dead.

Doctors there say the idea of co–sleeping, where a child or infant sleeps with an adult in a bed is common, but not recommended.

"Put the baby in a crib, if you don't have a crib or a bassinet, the baby being next to the bed is a great idea, but they need to still be on their backs, on a firm mattress, with no pillows in the bed or really soft fuzzy blankets," said OSF Saint Francis Advanced Practice Nurse Kelly Skender.

Cheney's family says they want people to learn from the mistake they made.

For now, Cheney is left is cope with the loss of her son.

"It is going to be hard, he's always going to be in my heart," said Cheney.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll has not determined the actual cause of Glen Cheney's death.

She says her conclusion is pending further testing to determine if an underlying medical condition could have contributed to Glen's death.

Peoria County Coroner says there have been six child deaths this year and all of them were discovered after co-sleeping in adult beds.

Where do you people get off? You know nothing about the families. Cause of death has not been determined and you are judging. I would love to know how you would feel if YOU were one of these moms and people had nothing better to do then to sit on here pointing fingers from their pedestals.

I always had my babys in the room with me, but they were also in their own bassenet at all times. Never sleeping in my bed with me! Sleeping with your children is a horrible idea for so many reasons, but worst yet it could be deadly.. My heart goes out to all the mommy's who have lost their babys. I know you only tried to do your best.

This should be a requirement: All mother's must be Told to have a Crib at Home , just as a Car seat is a requirement before you leave the hospital with your newborn. Sleeping in a Bed with a Newborn in any case is Wrong . I do Feel sorry for the Mother and her Family . My Prayer's Go to them . But There has been so many cases in the news! Before you leave the Hospital ,All Mother's Need to be Educated about the Dangers of Sleeping in a Bed with a Newborn.

Co-sleeping is fine as long as you are educated about it. The mother said there were no blankets or pillows on the bed except for the baby's blanket-- well, a baby blanket is still a blanket. Babies (even in their own crib) should not have blankets at all. If they need something warmer than sleepwear they can wear a blanket sleeper. Many people still use crib bumpers and they are just as dangerous as blankets in a crib.

You are SO misguided. NEVER let a baby sleep with you. When will people learn?

If you know you have sleep apnea or that you are a heavy sleeper, you should not let the baby sleep with you.I had a little girl that was a little premie and yes, I did let her sleep with me. I was a light sleeper, any kind of noise would wake me up. I let her sleep with me until she was out of the danger zone.If you drink and do drugs and you are passed out DO NOT LET THE BABY SLEEP WITH YOU!!!!

They put her on tv in hopes that others will see this and actually take it to heart to see how much pain and suffering this causes. In the hopes of saving another child and another family from having to go through this.

Why did you put that poor suffering mother on TV? There are better and more appropriate ways to educate the public about this subject.
