North Peoria Residents Come Together to Fight Crime

These Sommer Place residents are on high alert after a string of unusual burglaries in their North Peoria subdivision. You'd normally see Sandy Gallant behind a news desk, but Tuesday night she discussed her bout with burglary.

"The garage door was open, it's not normally open and as soon as I walked up to my car, I realized that my car had been trashed inside and there were numerous items missing", said Gallant.

And she wasn't the only one. Residents say there were several cases of burglary in a 48-hour period last month.

"We've had break-ins to people's homes and people's cars and property", said Lucy Desrosiers, and Gallant said "large items taken in the middle of the day when people were out and about".

So Tuesday night, residents gathered with Peoria police and city officials to discuss how to stay safe in a neighborhood where safety was never an issue. Sommer Place residents have already started a neighborhood watch.

"We've talked about several different ideas, from stickers to go in the resident's cars so people are aware of who's who and who belongs", said Desrosiers.

Mike Scally, the Peoria police Department Captain of Investigations, said, "it's different for every neighborhood, sometimes things that may seem peculiar in my neighborhood may be perfectly normal in yours".

And for these Sommer Place residents, they say after an unsettling couple of days, they're making an effort to get to know their community.

Desrosiers said, "now when we walk after dinner at night, we make a point to try and introduce ourselves to people".

And Gallants said "it's about being a good neighbor, it's about being a good community member, and it's also about making sure crime doesn't happen in your back yard".

No matter where you live, no matter what "security devices" people have, there will always be theft and robbery in some form. Words on a piece of paper, most commonly known to us as laws and rules, does not stop a dishonest person from doing bad things. Just as no security device will stop EVERYONE from breaking and entering because a human help to design and build that product. Words travel fast, and information travels faster.

There are not enough police to be everywhere all the time. They respond, no prevent. That's why the arguement for concealed carry permits are a great idea. The incidents in this nice neighborhood would drop in half if the indigents thought they might run into someone who could defend their property with lethal force.

To Ni-eve. The comment about "money" had nothing to do with the actual burglaries. The comment was directed in response to the previous comments about the news and police only responding to the neighborhood because of the residents being wealthy. If you read the previous comments they all indicate that our neighborhood is getting preferential treatment b/c of wealth. It's not b/c of money, it is b/c we are taking action and asked for help!

Hello...Resident...It has NOTHING to do with money? Why do people burglarize or rob??? Could it be for the money?

The resident's of Sommer Place got the local news and authorities involved. It has NOTHING to do with money. It is all about motivation and getting the job done. Please stop judging the residents! This can happen to anyone.

I think "Willing To Take a Bite Out of Crime" has the right idea. And for "amazed", a lock only stops an honest person, a thief will break in... maybe she was trying to minimize the damage done. I live in a "crime ridden" area of Bloomington and have lived there for the past 13 years and this weekend is the first problem I've ever had with theft (knock on wood)...maybe the people are hitting the wealthier areas figuring they have more to take.

This has been happening in the Tremont, Delavan, Groveland, and Mackinaw areas for several years now. But, there has never been a news story on those burglaries. Last year, nearly 50 homes and cars were hit in Tremont in one night and not one word of it anywhere. Guess we need to have a news anchor living in town to get coverage. Or better cops.

Come on PEOPLE! Do you have nothing better to do than to trash a local neighborhood for trying to be safe? If this was happening where you live, you would try to stop it too! If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it! Don't judge!

Only wealthy people matter.I agree with Wondering. It has to be somebody who either lives there or is working in that area.

Why would you leave your garage door open? Gallant says that her car was trashed, but not broken into. One needs to lock their car doors no matter when you are. That is an open invitation and it does not matter where you live. Sounds like this neighborhood and its residents need an education, not protection.

In light of the fact that these crimes are being committed on a regular basis in this area, wouldn't it be prudent to consider that perhaps it could be someone living in that neighborhood? After all, they do seem to know when people are out and about.

How about the city adding decorative street lights and charge the home owners $2,300 for them. They are doing this in Lynhurst to reduce crime. Oh by the way, this is costing the city over $1.5 million dollars. Smart way to spend money in a down time, don't you think?

These burglars can come over to my house any time. I'm insured by Smith and Wesson. Policy number 4506.
