Peoria Police are investigating an overnight shooting in the 700 block of Greenlawn.

Authorities were called to the scene around 11 Monday night.

They found 45 year old Jonathan Pickett with multiple gunshot wounds. He died soon after arriving to the hospital.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says the wounds were to the victim's back and chest and she believes a handgun was the weapon.

Peoria police officer Doug Burgess says despite this being the fifth homicide in the city this year, crime is still down.

"It's not that we're having a bad year with homicides. We're only at five right now. Two years ago, we were at 13, it's just that when you compare it to last year, sure you're going to think things are going up. They're still good. Crime is still down for the most part. Robberies are up and shootings are up, but actual homicides are down," said Burgess.

The shooting happened in an area that is watched closely by the neighborhood association.

Levetta Ricca is with the area Neighborhood Association.

She says, "I've lived here for 71 years. I don't like it. I don't like it at all. It's sad. To see that man laying there. It wasn't good. And to hear the shots. And that's getting to be an every day occurrence around here at night."

Peoria Police have no suspects in custody. They're asking anyone with information to call crimestoppers at 673-9000.

As a matter of fact hahaha Jonathan Pickett was a law abiding citizen who worked 3rd shift at the bakery by his home and had been for 12 years. Since his wife died he has the sole resonsibilty of raising his three children....So dont be so quick to open your mouth and talk about crap you know nothing about.

I'm sure it's easy to say that it's "only the fifth homicide this year" but to the families of these homicides still unsolved, it's not just a number. These are real people who need to have closure. Please remember that when stating lives as numbers.

I'm sure he was an "innocent victim".....he was turning his life around, going to church every Sunday, worked 40 hours a week, and was just minding his own business when he got shot.......SPARE ME!

"shootings are up" but "homicides are down"? Maybe thats because whomever is doing the shootings have poor aim or the victims have good doctors. Give Doug his PHD, I'll light a candle for the Pickett family.

To anonymous who said "it's too bad that us good citizens have to live in a city like this", no one said you can't move. I am sorry for the victim and his family.

i hope as jonathan pickett was gasping his last breath, someone was there and mentioned TO HIM, that the crime rate around here is lower than last year or that he should feel lucky he wasnt living in VEGAS. afterall, i'm sure he would have felt better knowing those statistics!

I agree with " Anonymous " ! WMBD-TV, also, reported this murder as Peoria's fifth. So, which is it? It sounds like the Peoria Police don't know either!

Who cares about a count. No matter if this guys was sitting in the middle of Greenlawn at 11:00 pm reading the bible; somebody had a reason to kill him unfortunately. In the cowboy days they shot each other when they were having a "bad hair day". Murder is murder no matter the body count. History is full of this unfortunate act. My heart goes out to his family. I'm sorry.

PJStar.com says it's the 6th homicide of the year, NEWS25.com says it is the 5th, but just a couple weeks ago they had stated in another report that we were up to 5, so which is it?? Get your stories straight Peoria!

I'm not sure that I would be bragging about how homicides are not as high this year as they were two years ago. This city is so sad. It's too bad that us good citizen's have to live in a city like this.
