Storms Strike, Relief In Sight

By Jeff Muniz

A line of strong thunderstorms rolled through area Saturday evening producing heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts. The storms also end a weeklong stretch of scorching heat and humidity.

These storms rolled through the Peoria area around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Mt. Hawley Airport recorded 60 mile per hour winds. Other damage reports include numerous power lines and tree limbs down in Galesburg, Cuba and Washington along with numerous other towns.

Locations in Logan and Mason County also were hit by hard rain. Two inches of rain in two hours left many ditches and low-lying roads flooded.

As of 10:00 p.m. Saturday evening, Ameren reports nearly four-thousand customers without power in Central Illinois. Knox County reported the most outages with a thousand plus throughout the evening.

The storms do provide some much needed relief to the stifling heat and humidity that has blanketed Central Illinois all week. Expect Sunny skies on Sunday with temperatures topping out in the low 80's under breezy conditions. Before the storm, heat index readings were topping out near 100 degrees again. High Temperatures average in the mid-80's for this time of the year.
