An early morning fire has damaged a church in West Peoria.

Firefighters responded to a call at the Cross Baptist Church on West Heading in around 4:45 Friday morning.

One woman said as soon as she smelled smoke she grabbed her baby and escaped her apartment.

"I just grabbed the baby, called 911 and came outside, and as I came down the bottom of the bottom of the step which is by the sanctuary the smoke was really think, I could actually hear it hitting the windows," said Julie Ellwanger.

"It started in the area of the organ and the big portion of the organ is about 10 feet in the air, 8 to 10 feet in the air, then it started up in the air, you know about 8 to 10 feet off the ground so other than what we expect right now, it is a accidental fire with the organ," said firefighter Robert Stecher.

Authorities say upon arrival they could see smoke coming out of the building.

The fire was put out quickly, but there was heavy smoke damage, amd no report of injuries.
