Twin Cities Tourism on the Rise

The Illinois Department of Tourism reports more people are visiting Central Illinois.

The apparent surge in tourism has led Bloomington leaders to continue funding one of the local tourism bureaus...rather than cutting the budget as originally anticipated.

Last week the Bloomington City Council approved allocations to the Bloomington Normal Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

The group also gets funding from the Town of Normal and McLean County.

The director says it's important that the community recognize the value visitors bring to the Twin Cities, and that new money into the community means less taxes for the average citizen to pay.

Last year more than 250,000 visitors came to the Twin Cities, generating 5 million dollars in revenue.

The bureau adds that although business travel is down, convention and sporting event attendance at the Coliseum, ISU and other area venues is up.
