Most people are storing some form of hazardous waste in their home, according to Russ Burcham of the Tazwell County Health Department.

On Saturday that agency was collecting hazardous household waste at a drop off station in East Peoria. Hazardous waste can include chemicals used for cleaning supplies, paint and old batteries.

Burcham says some of what's being discarded will even be recycled.

"Some of it is actually burned at recycling plants," said Burcham. "Other things are recycled and reused and made into other products. There are a couple of different ways that they dispose of it."

Burcham added that because of costs the health department only schedules these collection events once every 3 or 4 years. As many as a thousand cars were expected to drive through to dispose of hazardous waste.
