Fire in Galesburg Hotel Kills One

By WEEK Producer

A hotel fire in Galesburg claims the life of one man early Friday morning. The flames also all but destroyed the building.

Rescue crews received the emergency call from the Econo Inn on North Henderson Street about four a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters had to split into two crews to fight the fire and get occupants out.

Battalion Chief Chip Timmons says 17 rooms had already been evacuated. But one person was still inside.

"We had a single fatality, a male. We're not releasing the name until we contact the relatives at this point in time," said Timmons.

No one else was injured.

The Galesburg fire department believes the fire started in the room where the victim was found.

The fire destroyed the hotel's roof and most of the second story.
The cause is still under investigation.
