A Peoria woman has developed a unique way of raising awareness and support for breast cancer research.
Last summer Gina Kouri approached her friend, Callie Currin, to help her find a stylish hat.
Gina was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and began losing her hair from chemotherapy.
A week later Gina received the first Marigold hat, handmade by Callie.
"She couldn't find one for me, but she found this hat somewhere in town and put the aplique on it and that's how Marigold started" , Gina says.
Currin started making the hats for friends and as word spread she began selling them in the community.
The Marigold Label strives to represent the brightness and versatility of not only those dealing with cancer, but all women.
"The Mission of the hats is to plant seeds of brightness, love and hope and to let women know they're special", Currin says.
Cancer patient Pam Lingenfelter agrees, "It's just wonderful to have something feminine while your losing your hair and while going through this whole experience."
It takes Currin 45 minutes to make each design.
She says she spends the time praying for the recipient of the hat.
Prices range from 65–100 dollars, and portions of the sales are donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and also local families affected by cancer
