Damage to I-80 Bridge Closes Lanes

By WEEK Producer

Damage to the I–80 bridge over the Mississippi River at Le Claire, Iowa, is worse than first thought. And now officials say two lanes could be closed until 2010.

Inspectors looking at the bridge found a large crack in one steel beam, which prompted a closer look at the entire 43–year–old bridge, built upriver from the Quad Cities.

The inspectors discovered a second crack in a steel beam on May 12.

I–DOT officials maintain the bridge and say it won't fully reopen until at least late fall and possibly next summer. One westbound lane remains open.

The estimated cost of the repairs is 6 million dollars.
