Fatal Motorcycle Accident

A Woodford County man died last night while riding his motorcycle on Route 24.

Authorities say a minivan drove in front of the motorcyclist killing him and injuring his passenger.

It happened around 8–30 last night at the intersection of Route 24 and 26–hundred East in El Paso.

The Woodford County Coroner says 42–year–old Roland Shieber of Secor died at the scene while his 14–year–old daughter Kassandra was taken to a Bloomington Hospital to be treated for her injuries.

Police say 51–year–old Robert Boma of El Paso was driving the minivan.
The Woodford County Coroner and Sheriff's Office are investigating.

For all the HORRIBLE IRRESPONSIBLE auto mobile drivers that do talk on cell phones, speed, put on make up, blast their radios, etc That they should grow up. For legislators to figure out a way to make things more safe as we have tiny bikes, med sized vehicles and great big truckers with some safe and some NOT SO SAFE!!!! I pray for all involved that GOD gives us all driving mercy to see us safely to our destinations. Mostly I pray for all of you that had a loss on either side of this TRAGEDY

Ernurse how about we make dog walkers and joggers and bicyclists and little old ladies and children sign that contract too so when they get hit by irresponsible DISTRACTED drivers its their fault. Seriously. Look twice save a life put down the makeup and the cheeseburger and the phone and pay ATTENTION to the 4000 lb piece of machinery you are operating and the road and maybe just maybe another biker will get home to their family where they started from.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Rollie and my prayers are with Kassie. I think the way this accident was headlined says alot for the bias by the media also. The article says FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT.It should have read:MAN KILLED BY MINI-VAN..The media is so quick to say motorcycle accident when in this case there would not have been a accident at all except the mini-van hit the caused the accident. To ERNURSE I agree with O.P. I think you have injured or killed rider!

Last week I just saw some lady on 24 go to pass me and the guy in front of me who was driving too slow. There were 3 cars in oncoming traffic that HAD to pull into the shoulder to avoid hitting her. Oh, and yes, she had a handicap sign hanging from the rear view. I feel safer on I74. Fellow Cycler

The individual in the driver seat needs to take personal responsibility for their actions (or lack of action) while in control of a vehicle. Period. It takes 2 to have an accident.

To ER nurse: You sound like a ditz. I feel like you are the type that doesn't pay attention to your job either if you can't see something as simple as a headlight coming down the road. You probably don't see little children playing by streets either. Kassie I'm sorry for posting this here but, maybe people will start paying attention so no other children will have to lose any of there parents like you did.May God ease your sorrow.

How harsh people! Where in this article did they say the person in the van was talking on a cell? Where did they say that he wasn't paying attention? Where did it say the man on the motorcycle was reckless? It said none of these things. So far this is nothing more than an ACCIDENT (look it up). Have some compassion. Both of these families are going through a terrible time and they do not need society taking sides when there aren't any sides to take...at least so far.

I am sorry for your loss I've been there too. My mom was was killed in a auto accident. People need to be careful when they get behind a car, motorcycle. I know just a couple days ago there was three c rockets on the road stopped real fast flew the back of the bike up in the air almost flying his girl off the back end of it,then went on the express way they were weaving and driving like a bat out of hell. Are they required to follow the same rules of the road as us cars, vans, suv, trucks?

Sunday, Apr 19 at 8:24 AM ScooterDude wrote ...

I use a scooter to commute - pretty much everyday I encounter a driver who looks maybe one way and pulls out. Usually on a cell phone. I expect nothing less as most Americans are utterly incompetent and cannot be expected to do anything but cause problems and then use excuses to absolve themselves of responsibility. Usually they blame the victim. Tough to imagine that a man riding his bike with his teenage daughter would be anything less than 100% attentive to the road ahead.

Dear ERnurse, I have been riding for a number of years and I feel that I can hold my own in most situations. I would be most honored if you would accompany me on my motorcycle as we attend a memorial ride for riders that were killed by inattentive auto drivers. I will even supply the helmet. Why do I have this sick feeling in my stomach that you or someone you know has seriously injured or killed a motorcyclist ? The 4 most famous words 'I didn't see him' seems to void out all murder charges !

the problem is motorcycles don't have the same safety requirements that other vehicles on the road do- so maybe we just need to make them illegal on the road. ( or have the people who want to ride them on the road sign a contract saying they will not hold others accountable for their risk of their own life) Lets face it, it is harder to see you and you would most likely not die if the same accident happened and you were in a minivan with your seatbelt on!

I think that they need tougher laws to protect motorcycle riders. They have them for construction workers. I don't know how many times I have had cars pull out in front of me or fly by when coming to a merger lane from 2 lanes into 1. I have come to a point that if the police can't take care of this problem, then maybe I'll have to.I feel So sorry for that little girl and her family because some moron wasn't paying attention. This will effect her the rest of her life.
