There are three different homes providing them living arrangements.
Treatment for Saint Jude patients can last weeks, months and even years. And instead of families looking for accommodations elsewhere throughout Memphis, St. Jude provides housing for free. This is one room at the Target House.
Maria Barreda's son Victor is a patient at Saint Jude.
"While it's been hard at times, we've been very blessed because St. Jude has provided housing and meals for Victor and myself. That is a huge relief when you're trying to help your child get through the challenges of dealing with cancer or any other catastrophic disease."
There are several different houses in Memphis... families are placed in different homes depending on how long they will be at the hospital for treatment.
The Grizzly House is the only 'on campus' housing facility for parents and patients.
It's for short stays in Memphis... funded by the Memphis Grizzly's Basketball team, a sports theme can be found throughout.
There is a workout room for parents to relieve stress, a cafeteria with hoops and flat screen TVs and a game room.
It's a home away from home for the parents and the children.
The Target House is where families go if they will be in Memphis for a year or more.
Like the Grizzly house, there are rooms dedicated just for the kids, and so families can interact with other.
Barreda says "You have somebody to talk to that helps build a support system. That helps us to recharge and keep moving forward."
The rooms are designed similar to apartments... fully furnished and the kids' rooms are specific to their likes and dislikes.
What's more... the families get gift cards to grocery stores in Memphis.
Barreda says, "Hotels can be very impersonal. Here you are dealing with other parents. There are different activities they provide. There are meals that are provided to help you interact with other families at the end of the day. Activities for the children so they can play and just be kids."
Saint Jude families say they are so grateful for places like Target House, because during their time in Memphis it gives them a place to come and relax.
St. Jude can make these living accommodations possible for the families and patients because of your donations.
