Tax Day Tea Party

Central Illinoisans say enough is enough

Police estimated that 3,000 people attended Wednesday's Tax Day Tea Party at the Peoria County Courthouse.

Justin Abatie is "Tea'd off".

"The answer to 2009 is 1776. Whoo!," Justin shouted into his megaphone on the steps of the Peoria County Courthouse.

Like the colonists in Boston, who revolted against burdensome British taxation in 1773, Abatie, and an estimated 3,000 thousand others, staged their own "Tea Party" Wednesday in downtown Peoria. TEA, or T–E–A, stands for "taxed enough already".

"Out of control spending is running rampant through Washington these days," Abatie told News 25, "and our elected officials are just not listening to what the people have to say. We elected them and we are their bosses and they work for us, we do not work for them."

Kathleen Healde is worried about the burden the federal debt will put on her grandchildren.

"I have a 2 year-old granddaughter and an 11 year-old grandson," said Healde, "and I feel the money is being spent terribly. Terribly. And I think they’re going to pay for it and its an unfair burden."

There were more than 300 Tea Parties on Tax Day all across America - 13 of them in Illinois. At all of them, people are saying they're fed up with massive government spending, complaining that the federal government has grown into exactly what George Washington and the founders fought to defeat over 230 years ago.

"The Constitution is almost being disregarded in today’s world," said Greg Albrecht. "A lot of people argue that its old and outdated, but its worked for over 200 years."

Christina Arndt is especially passionate about today's event.

"Two of my ancestors, Daniel Carroll of The Constitution and John Carroll the Declaration of Independence, risked their lives. It says in our Constitution that we have a right, when the government is against us, that we can form our own and that’s what we’re doing."

"We’re fed up," said a man named Scott, who declined to provide his last name. "And if they don’t adhere to The Constitution they’ll be out of a job in two or four years."

That's because those gathered Wednesday at the courthouse believe America belongs to "We the People".

Rep. Jan Shakowsky,D Il., referred to the tax day protesters as, "despicable." Let her know how despicable the spending spree in D.C. is on sunday evening, may 3rd, when she speaks at the Lariat Steakhouse in Peoria, Il. People have the right to peacefully protest against the waste of our hard earned tax dollars. it's the waste that is despicable, not the people who are sick of paying for it all!

The American corporation I used to work for was in the second highest corporate tax bracket in the world and that was pre-Obama.Obama wants to raise it. I'm now permanently laid-off. Our government needs to wake up. High taxes won't create jobs. Participating in the Tea Party was time well spent.I felt it was my patriotic duty to speak out against those responsible for putting me in this situation. GOD Bless America.

The brainlessness of the critics of the tea parties is stunning -- it's the same comments EVERYWHERE on the 'net. Have any of you calling the tea party protesters "rich" or "racist" bothered to TALK to someone at one of the tea parties? Have you investigated their motivations yourself? If so, why are your attacks on them word-for-word repetitions of Democrat party talking points?

A child born today is about $30,000 in debt the day it leaves the hospital. BO and company want to bump that up 20% or more this year, with never-ending increases after that, and That's what the TEA Party protosters don't like. While Republicans hope to cash in on the fact that BO is the new poster child for government mismanagement, they themselves are far from innocent. I hope the protesters and all who agree with them will wake up and vote 3rd party next election.

Its not Bush or Obama or any other president that is to blame. The blame lies with the BIG banking and business interests that run things from behind the scenes. Wake Up! Get out of the left vs. right paradigm that keeps you from realizing the truth.

I attended my first political protest on April 15,2009.I want for my voice to be heard. Out of pride I will not ask my rich uncle to buy my groceries or pay for my mortgage.I will teach my children to respect the freedom to work for your own. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY DOES NOT MEAN EQUAL DISTRIBUTION!I will continue to speak out, sorry if this frightens the liberals. Where I have been does not matter as much as where I am today!I don't steal money from my children and neither should the government.

The tax-and-spenders of both parties need to understand the US revolves around 'We the People', not 'We the Government'. LEAVE OUR SELF EARNED PROPERTY ALONE!!! Move to Britian if you want the government to make your decisions for you.

"we the rich"? how has anyone benefited from the GM bailouts? The AIG bonuses? the trillions of dollars in spending that our children are going to have to pay? look at the numbers, and Obama is either lying when he says that only those who make 250,000 a year will be taxes or he is going to bankrupt the country. If you add up all the wealth of those who make over 250,000 a year it does not pay for the amount of spending we plan to do

It's "we the people" in the public plea, but in private it's more like 'we the rich'. No thanks!!!

This has nothing to do with Obama. We the people are just feed up, with the way the goverment is spending money, bailing out way too many businesses. CNN and MSNBC didn't run anything on if cause Obama was not there, the real news networks covered. If we don't do something about it soon, we will be living in the USSA (United Socialist States of America).

This is all well and good that these people did this to show that were feed up. BUT do you really think it is going to do any good NOT!! I don't care who you elect to government in washington or sprongfield there all crooked or soon will be after getting into office. All these people that are put in office have millions of dollars to begin with. Why can't a simple everyday person get elected. Because they don't have the money thats why and never will. Death and TAXES only sure thing!!

This is not about Republicans or Democrats. This is about what is right for our country. We want better government, less taxation, and opportunity for everyone. And..I said opportunity - not entitlement. If you want to work hard and make a lot of money, I have no right to ask you to share. It's my responsibility to take care of myself. It's the government's job to keep the country safe and the roads passable. The rest is up to us!

Hmm where were these people the last 8 years of crazy spending. You can blame Obama all you want but he inherited this problem. Even if McCain had won these tough decisions still would have to be made. We did not make the leaders from the last 8 years answer to us now we hopefully have a chance.
