You could call it a sign of 21–st century learning...

Fifth through 12–th graders in the state of Illinois will soon have a larger variety of courses available...online.

Peoria County's Regional Office of Education or ROE announced today that they received a grant from the Illinois State Board of Education in order for them to create a virtual school for the state of Illinois.

ROE Consultant John Meisinger says the program should reboot education in the community.

ROE Consultant John Meisinger said, "I think it's going to make things more available. It's going to offer like I said the offerings that they can't get at their home school it's going to make it for students who have an alternative way of learning students who may not function well in a crowded school may be able to take some of their coursework at home and then maybe come to school part–time."

ROE says once created, the Illinois Virtual School Program will increase learning opportunities for both students and educators.

The online school will offer A–P courses in addition to other foreign language and science classes.

This kind of implies that Illinois hasn't had a statewide virtual school that has been operating for 8 years now and providing these kinds of opportunities. This ROE is basically the new provider of that earlier initiative (at least on the receiving end, I know that the actual regulations behind the scene are a little more complex than that).
