Five soldiers with the Illinois National Guard were injured Saturday in Afghanistan after a suicide car bomb exploded. One service member who was not with the guard died in the attack.

The injured members were based out of Galva and Joliet. One of the soldiers was seriously injured and taken to Germany for treatment.

The attack took place on a heavily-guarded road between the German Embassy and Camp Eggers, a U-S Military Base in Kabul.

"The fact of the matter is they detonated this explosive device right in a crowded area that was both used by civilians and military people. Once again it is showing that they have no care what so ever, who they kill, their effort is just to kill," Colonel Jerry O'Hara says.

Afghan officials say at least two civilians were killed and at least 23 others injured in the attack. The Taliban is claiming responsibility.

Nearly three-thousand Illinois soldiers were mobilized in October for fighting in Afghanistan. It's the largest call-up of the Illinois National Guard since World War Two.
