Roland Burris Heads to Washington

By Tom McIntyre

Roland Burris headed off to Washington D.C. Monday afternoon. What happens when Governor Blagojevich's U.S. Senate appointee gets there is still a question.

At Chicago's Midway airport, Burris said he's ready to serve, and said he plans to meet with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"I am the junior senator from Illinois. I wish my colleagues in the press would recognize that, all the drama, I guess it keeps you all in a job, is that right?" stated Burris.

But Burris plans to meet with Reid on Wednesday, a day after Democrats are expected to object to Burris being sworn in with the rest of his incoming Senate class.

The man who would grant or refuse permission for Burris to enter the senate is Sgt–at Arms Terry Gainer, former head of the Illinois State Police.

"Knowing the Senate institution, the way it works, and knowing Mr. Burris, I don't think there's going to be any pushing and shoving in the hallway," said Gainer.

Burris says will be back in Illinois on Thursday. He's been subpoenaed by the panel considering the impeachment of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The full Illinois House meets this week and an impeachment vote could come this week.

"You'll probably see an overwhelming number of yes votes on impeachment. It may be unanimous," said Rep. Tom Cross.

Meanwhile, a federal judge in Chicago says prosecutors can have three more months to obtain an indictment in Gov. Rod Blagojevich's corruption case.

The man who could be in line to take over from Blagojevich is setting up a panel to make recommendations on cleaning up state government.

"They are laughing at us. Illinois Government is not serving the people. We must change that," said Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn.

And, Governor. Blagojevich's lawyer now says he'll ask a federal judge to give the House impeachment committee all the FBI tapes of the governor's conversations.

That would amount to thousands of hours of audiotape which could delay everything.
