Donut Shop Gets Dunked By Economy

By Jeff Muniz

And one area business that banks on sweat treats has also turned sour with the economy. There's no more runs for morning doughnuts at Krispy Kreme.

The Peoria location closed its doors last week. The donut shop at the intersection of Glen and War Memorial opened two years ago to long lines and much anticipation.

The store in Bloomington remains open.

Their products are good.I always said they placed their building in the wrong place. It should had gone off of University,as this would be half way. They should had known they wouldn't last that long.I mean they did have a long pause to finish the building in the first place.Yes,their health dept score didn't help their bussiness also.

I agree with the others, Im not saying the economy around here is perfect, but Krispy Kreme and other companies like Linens and Things were introuble long before any economic downturn. I guess it was another slow news in Peoria...

sure the economy had something to do with it, but there were other factors involved too, such as a poor health inspection and a more healthy-minded population. but we can also blame the city of Peoria. someday, when ALL the businesses are gone, maybe THEN, the city will realize that they cant keep taxing us to death!! businesses cant survive if all they pay is real estate taxes and sales taxes. and if landlords have to keep raising rents to cover their expenses, no business will ever survive

It wasn't the economy that sunk the Peoria Krispy Kreme...it was just poor management. It was as if they just didn't care. And that's too bad. Maybe it was under the same management as the Burger King on University...customer service doesn't seem to be the number one priority there either. I'm sure that getting a low health inspection score didn't make matters any better.

Never was there and the economy had nothing to do with it!

I feel it more poor management. Everytime I was there there were no donuts and rude workers.I think location was another downfall - sad to see them go

I'm sure scoring a 60 on a health inspection did not help with business.

Unfortunately.... One of many to come - How can a city afford all the infrastructure and new construction when the population doesn't grow at the same rate? Just like a New Mall.. (Look at vacancy's already) C'mon.. we couldn't keep the old one filled.... RIP Krispy....

What is it with you people?? First Jen at HOI posts a web headline saying the Starbucks on Sterling was closing to the economy, now this? Both companies have been in trouble for some time and foolishly over-extended themselves. That's why the stores closed. Yellow journalism guys.
