Holiday Wreaths On Headstones

Tools

By Jeff Muniz

Typically you would see American flags fluttering in the wind next to a soldier's grave. On Saturday, fallen veterans received a wreath.

Wreaths Across America began more than 15 years ago when the Worcester Wreath Company began a tradition of placing live wreaths on the headstones of fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery.
Since then, nearly 400 locations have joined the national ceremony, now including Peoria's Springdale Cemetery.

"I couldn't be confirmed until I had a cemetery in Peoria lined up so I had to give a presentation to Springdale Cemetery board requesting permission and after that I was confirmed as location leader," Patti Smith says.

Participants in the morning ceremony placed 100 wreaths, which are 15 dollars each.
