Motion Fitness to Fight Childhood Obesity

By Garry Moore

The Peoria Park District is using the 'motion fitness' craze to take aim at childhood obesity.

Fitness experts in conjunction with OSF Saint Francis Medical Center have unveiled a new indoor playground at the Riverplex. The room features rock climbing and "Exer–Gaming".

Experts say they're concerned about the growing number of overweight kids and want everyone to know that obesity 'won't play in Peoria.'

"The only exer–gaming room of its type in the nation. It played here in Peoria first. So if I had advice for parents out there, it is Christmas time, tell them to get a River Plex membership. Tell them to get rid of the gameboy, tell them to get rid of all of those things that you do with your hands and have them start using their legs and their hearts," said Carl Cannon.

Come January, officials at the Riverplex say a pilot study of kids at–risk for obesity will be conducted using the Motion Fitness room.
