The state of Illinois is hoping some new signs on the highways may keep more people from drinking and driving.
As a result of a new state law, the Illinois Department of Transportation installed the first DUI memorial sign. The sign recognizes the tragic loss of life due to drunk driving.
The first sign honors 17–year old Caitlin Weese of Elgin and was installed along Illinois–72.
"Some people have made the comment that geez I don't want to see those signs all over the place. I don't want to see those sign all over the place either. I guarantee you I never wanted to see a sign on the side of the road with my step–daughter's name on it in her memory," said Joel Mains, Step-father of Weese.
The state has already received 25 applications for the signs. A family member of a DUI crash victim must request the sign and can do that at an I–DOT district office.
The cost for both signs are 200–dollars and some organizations are providing funding for the signs.
