Battery Powered TV's Not Ready For DTV

Tools

By WEEK Producer

The Nielsen Company reported earlier this week more than nine million U.S. homes are not ready for the DTV switch. Another 12 and a half million homes would have at least one TV that won't work.

Four months from today (10-17-08) broadcast television stations around the country will be broadcasting only in digital.

Your living room TV may already be set for the digital signal conversion, but is your portable TV?

All of the nation's seven million battery operated TV sets are analog and that could be a problem in an emergency.

The digital converter boxes must be plugged into a wall and that renders them useless when the power is out. Electronic manufacturers are working on new mobile TV sets that would receive a separate signal.

If you still need a converter box for your TV, you can get a government coupon to help pay for it, just go to click on News Links on the navigation bar.
