El Paso Shooting Likely A Suicide

By Gina Ford

More details in yesterday's bizarre Woodford County shooting are unfolding after today's autopsy.

After an El Paso woman shot her husband, officials believe she may have killed herself.

Kaye Shepherd, a bartender at the El Paso V-F-W, was outside on a break, when a man across the street shouted for her to call the Police.

"And I just happened to have a phone on me, so I called 911 for him", said Shepherd.

Shepherd, crossed the street and sat down next to the 77-year-old Keith McClure, who then explained to her, what his wife had done...

"Shot him in the leg and he wasn't sure if she still had the gun on her and didn't know what was going on inside", said the bartender.

Investigators say McClure and his 68-year-old wife Lynda were involved in a domestic dispute that resulted in his injury and her death.

"We found that Lynda McClure died from a penetrating gunshot wound to the chest...which it appears too be very consistent with being self-inflicted", said Tim Ruestman, the Woodford County Coroner.

Police entered the home on South Elm Street through a window, and found her body barricaded in a bedroom.

Many El Paso residents say they weren't familiar with the McClures and are shocked an incident like this took place in their quiet Central Illinois town.

El Paso natives say they know most families in town, but when they heard of the incident, many could not put faces with the names.

"I think they might be new to the area, maybe a year...year and a half or something like that, but I don't recall seeing them", said Tanning Salon Owner, Ellen Benedict.

And the ones who had seen the McClures before say they kept to themselves.

"Never heard anything about them, they were always friendly, and he waves and that's about it. You know they've always been a quiet couple", said the VFW bartender.

"It was shocking, it was very shocking to think that something like that would happen here", said Benedict.

But El Paso officials say residents should not be afraid as the incident was not a random act, and they continue to investigate the situation thoroughly.
