Peoria Council Gets 1st Look At Budget

By Tom McIntyre

The Peoria City Council Tuesday night got a first look at a very preliminary 2009 budget.

Interim City Manager Henry Holling presented the 174–point-five million dollar spending guide to council members.

He called it a "maintenance budget" – which adds no new positions, but keeps with needed improvements and commitments.

But, while Holling says a balanced budget is the goal...the preliminary document carries a two–point–two million deficit.

Most revenue sources are predicted to be flat or showing little growth—with the exception of increases in the property tax base.

The Council has three more budget sessions planned over the next five weeks.

Rather than increasing property taxes, wouldn't it be better to eliminate a pork barrel project that has the reeking of croynism, such as the Lynnhurst decorative street light project, with a projected cost of over 1.2 million dollars. Those dollars would get us half way to approving a balanced budget.
