18th District Congressional candidates Colleen Callahan, Aaron Schock, and Sheldon Schafer went head to head on the issues during a one-hour live televised debate Monday night on WEEK-TV.
The three would not wholeheartedly embrace the economic bailout plan passed by Congress last week.
Here's a summary of the candidates' positions:
Green Party candidate Schafer: "It was even admitted, and now perhaps we're the saying the outcome. We don't know (if the bailout) is going to work. It seems decisions made in three or seven days for something of such globel impact...were made very precipitously."
Democratic candidate Callahan: "As distasteful as this final decision was, something did have to be done. The severity of the situation really dictated, in my opinion, that we had to do something. We did have to bring stability and an underpinning of confidence back to our marketplace."
Republican candidate Schock: "From a fundamental standpoint, I don't like the idea of government getting involved in the private sector...that being said, I think there are exceptions to every rule."

Why? What are we going to do next time? The market was lending money to people who couldn't afford it and now I have to pay. There is nothing that guarantees our standard of living but our willingness to work and do better. I think we are just prolonging the inevitable and making sure some people get to keep the bonuses they "earned" making bad loans.
