No Evidence of Trauma in Babies' Deaths

By WEEK Producer

Two more families are in mourning after their babies died over the weekend.

The Peoria County Coroner says autopsies of 5–month–old Jaylin Maxison and 2–month–old Kendrick Franklin show no evidence of trauma in their deaths. Coroner Johnna Ingersoll also says more investigation is needed to determine if overlay was a contributing factor in their deaths.

Both babies were found unresponsive on adult beds. Doctors and pediatricians encourage parents not to lay their infants on adult beds, which tend to be soft and allow the child to suffocate.

"Babies always sleep in their own crib or bassinet. That they always be placed on their backs. That they be placed on a firm mattress.
And that the bed is kept clear of soft things... the baby could potentially suffocate," said Dr. James Hocker, Medical Director of NICU.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS most often occurs in infants two to four months old. It is estimated that over two–thousand infants a year die from SIDS.
