Not doubt, you've heard of the three R's—reading, 'writing, and 'rithmatic.

But at one Peoria school, there is just as much emphasis being placed on the one 'S'—Science!

A teacher's quest is making sure students are meeting the challenges of the 21st Century.

They're hard to see...but they're right in front you.
Not the students...the Atoms, molecules, even some bacteria.
These students know they're there, thanks to science teacher Scott Gore.

"Science is critical because the skills students learn in science class—observing, classifying, learning how to predict, infer and give a description of the things they observe—those are skill that are transferable in all the subject areas—reading writing, mathematics, and so forth," said teacher Scott Gore.

Here, students soak up knowledge from the teacher with the charismatic smile and nurturing style.

"Mister Gore is a fun teacher. He explains everything more easy and he gives fun assignments," said student Gary Hatcher.

"He explains it more than what my teachers did last year; that's what I like about Mister Gore...And Science, my mom says I can get, I can do more with Science, and I think Science will help me be a nurse," said student Marissa Edwards.

"I think we're seeing a greater emphasis on the instruction of Science because there has been in America a decline in the performance level of Science students. So, National attention has been brought to the forefront, and we're now realizing that we have to undergrid those scientific skills and pour more attention and finances into Science curriculum. And District 150 is leading in that arena these days," said Gore.

Last year around this time, Gore wasn't teaching. He was chasing down dropouts as a Truant Officer. He had stopped teaching, but decided he wanted to get back into the classroom.

Did the District come and get you out of Project Target and say 'hey, we want you to go back into the classroom', or did you decide to do that?

"I decided to come back. I decided to come back. Serving as a Truant Officer was one area of service to the students, but I realized I could have a greater impact being back in the classroom and having that day to day instruction and interaction with the youth," said Gore.

And the early indication is that the chemistry is working.
