Millions to Clean Sewage Problem

The price tags are in on what it will cost to fix Peoria's messy problem with sewage being sent into the Illinois River.

The Clean River Committee has come up with three options that range from 105 to 262 million dollars.

The EPA is mandating the city control its sewage overflow into the Illinois River.

About 28 times a year raw sewage is sent into the Illinois because heavy rains fill combined storm and sanitary sewers.

The cheapest option is to add storage and treatment facilities along the river.

The other two possibilities increase the price tag about another 100–million dollars by eliminating the overflows completely.

The Committee is reviewing the choices right now before a month–long public hearing session begins.

and how long have they known this sewage flows into the river? A long time! Something should have been done years ago. Just another example of how this city doesn't fix it's existing problems in a timely manner.

Thank goodness!! Good to know that this issue is not being ignored. The river is a great asset to have in this area but it is so nasty that people won't take full advantage. It would be nice to have clean water to boat,swim,ect. with out having to worry about sprouting a third eyeball on your forehead! I believe this community should band together and demand the river be cleaned up! What are we leaving for future generations??? Time to get serious folks!
