Coal Fire Plant Hearing

The proposed construction of a coal–fired boiler in Pekin has state and local environmentalist voicing their concerns.

Midwest Grain Products in Pekin has filed for a construction permit with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. If approved the permit would allow MGP to switch from natural gas to coal, in order to produce steam for its plant.

Folks against the switch say MGP is taking a step backwards when it comes to protecting the environment.

"From the cradle to the grave there is a lot of environmental degradation when they mine there is some water pollution when there is coal combustion waster after they burn it, it has to somewhere and then of course you have to worry about that polluting the water as well," said Becki Clayborn, Sierra Club Regional Representative.

At 7 p.m. Monday, July 14th, the Illinois EPA is hosting a public hearing on MGPs proposal in Pekin's High School Theatre.
