District 150 School Days Get Shorter

By WEEK Producer

The District 150 Board of Education Monday night—by a five to one vote—approved pushing back the start of school in elementary grades by 45 minutes.
At a meeting at Kellar School last week, many parents protested the change, saying shortening the time in school was not in the best interests of children.
District 150 said the shorter day would not impact education and would save money.

This whole ordeal disturbs me. My mother has a hard enough time raising my 3 little sisters as well as myself. This decision that the board has decided to come to will only make her life much more stressful!!!! THANKS FOR NOTHING!

Ok...this is getting out of hand.District 150 needs a lot of things and I totally understand.I'm behind them on this one. School IS NOT a daycare. Look, we made less last year than ever- pretty much poverty level, and that DOES NOT MATTER. The economy IS NOT the schools problem and what WE do with that extra time at home is NOT their problem, it's ours. Spend this extra time writing our politicians for the extra money we need in our schools. I really think there are other things to focus on!

I'm not saying they made the right decision (I'm torn), but did it ever occur to anyone that parents are responsible for their children and employment schedule? I understand, it's not easy, but it doesn't change who is responsible. That is why I left my job and am a SAHM. Could we use more money-YES, few couldn't! However, we are making it. This isn't possible for single parents or minimum wage workers (our one income is over double min wage), but what about the others? Time w/kids matters...

This is the only thing you can do. Thanks for adding to my problems. Somehow my property taxes have gone up $950 in the past three years. My kids attend an Edison school. What are you people doing? This is so diappointing. There has to be something else you can do. This makes Peoria very unattractive. I wouldn't want to move here with these kind of hours if I had a choice.

I would LOVE to be able to be home when my children come home from school. Times have changed . . . and the role of schools have changed, too. Our kids attend Edison because they offer choice without additional cost to our family. We pay a large sum in property taxes, that it is impossible to send 2 children to private schools. We are in it for the long haul with Dist 150 and wish the Board of Education was, too.

When did the school become a babysitter? I guess schools are used more as a daycare than to educate kids or at least that's what I'm reading here. Why shouldn't teachers go home after work? Do we hang around our jobs after work? Why aren't WE helping OUR kids? Remember when our parents helped us with our homework? Why not get with the teachers to help educate our kids. We find time to protest, why can't we make time for our kids' education?

District 150 is supposed to serve the community and ALL its children. A 9:15 start is going to jeapordize children's safety when they are left alone to stand at bus stops or to get themselves to school because their parents can't afford before care and must leave for work. It's disappointing that the administration are not listening to the concerns of parents and teachers. Parents need to hold jobs to make ends meet and this decision hurts our community. We aim to leave Dist 150. Shame on you.

I am wondering what type of research was performed to determine that shorter instructional days would benefit the children. Has this been tested and proven? What analysis has been done to prove that shorter days leads to better education? Where ...? Guaranteed my children will be strong candidates for private school next year. This is ridiculous.

Will employers accomodate their employees schedule change? Most jobs begin at 8:30 or 9:00. I will now have to pay for my children to attend latchkey before and after school and still not get home until 6:00. Thank you Dist 150 for making my work day end later and decreasing the amount of time I have with my kids. I'm sure they will vote to take away Edsion, which provides a much better education than 150 can give. I have always supported Dist 150 but I will start rethinking my position now.

How will it really be saving money when so many parents will now need to place their children in the before-school program due to work schedules????????? Did the Board forget they'll need to pay that staff?!?!

After spending a few years, I have reached the final conclusions: 1. Parents and teachers do NOT have a voice in the district 2. Irrational and quick decisions are made...forget the consequences 3. The district looks at finances, NOT children 4. It is teachers, like me and many others, that will act in the best interest of your children

I DONT THINK THEY SHOULD PULL BACK 45 MINUTES ON DISTRICT150 SCHOOL BECUASE THAT IS MAKING EACH STUDENT FAILING THERE GRADES JUST BECUASE THEY PULLED BACK THE ELEMENTRY SCHOOLS 45 MINUTES DURING EACH CLASS IN SCHOOL NOW MY ADVICE TO YOU SCHOOL BOARD IS TO MAKE EACH CLASS 55 MINUTES NOT 45 MINUTES.

I expected to keep my children in district 150 despite all of the issues it presents with. I will now remove them. I have met no one who thinks that this is a good idea. I will now send my children where they can get a better education and no longer support Peoria schools.
