Two years after the deaths of three of their classmates... a group of students at Midwest Central High School are honoring their memory through a driving skills for life project.

Their project, I-PASS... or "I Practice Auto Safety Skills" won first place in their region's Driving Skills for Life Competition in Springfield Thursday.

The students focused on speed and space management, hazard recognition and vehicle handling.

The group wanted to participate in the project because two years ago three of their friends died in a car accident.

Midwest Central High School Senior, Allison Trainer said, "Jake, John and Jeremy they were lost in a car crash and we just really felt the need to do this as seniors. We wanted to bring that back and show the younger kids so they didn't have to learn for themselves they could through us through our pain."

More than one hundred schools were selected throughout the state to participate in this program.

The school receives an 8 thousand dollar grant.

Three thousand goes for continuing the project next year.

The remaining five thousand dollars goes to an after-prom party next year.
