No Adrenaline Rush for Teenagers

The Peoria City Council tonight stopped a new teen club from ever opening on North University.

In an 8 to 3 vote, the council denied changing an ordinance to allow businesses within 200 feet of a residential zone to apply for a teen club license.

The Peoria City council ended a tenuous but brief relationship with the teen club 'Adrenaline,' saying it's not you, it's the location.

Council Ryan Spain said, "I'd certainly love the opportunity to find the appropriate place for these types of projects to move forward because the message should not be that the city doesn't support young people, we certainly do. And we'll work to find the right place to make this happen."

'Adrenaline' President Cathy Behm said, "It's very disappointing because it's not easy to open a business in Peoria. If you'd been with us three months ago and we would've had this response we would've looked elsewhere."

The current ordinance requires at least 500 feet between a teen club and a residential area. The site on North University is only 200 feet from the nearest home. City council members worried about the noise from the club, as well as outside of the club after it closed. Police coverage was also a concern.

Clyde Gulley was one of three yes votes. "I just can't understand how when we have what I call a more organized opportunity for the youth that this council would vote it down."

Club President Cathy Behm says she is disappointed but not defeated. "We will open, we will find a building and we will open whether it's in Peoria or East Peoria or a surrounding area that welcomes business.

In the meantime they will continue to sponsor teen dances at the Exposition Gardens.

In other business, the council voted to try to negotiate a study for a rail–trail along the Kellar Branch rail line.

Galesburg, IL also has many empty spaces available. It's not a great place for business, but there is lots of kid's and it's a very safe town. You should consider using it.

How can Barb Van Akon help Pat Landis correct a million dollar zoning mistake and make it seem okay? She told me I had her support because of a similiar situation zoning made with us but changed her vote without any further discussion with me. My question to her is how can you be a representative of Peoria when you go back on your word? My opinion is that you would have found a reason to vote against Adrenaline opening under any circumstances! We handled every concern you addressed to us!

I look forward to opening but with the expection of Mr. Montelongo and Mr. Gulley we have not had any assistance in finding a safe place for teens to call their own!

If Peoria is being selfish- we would love to have it in Eureka. The People complaining are incredibly selfish. I guess they would prefer the kids are somewhere on the streets doing drugs or worse, as long as they aren't in THEIR neighborhood. It would have been a wonderful addition to Peoria. This is another thing to give Peoria a bad reputation. Happy we moved away from there!

I think that this is awful. I think the closer a teen club would be to a residential area the more likely the teens will use it. And the closer eye the parents can keep on their kids. We are always complaining about how the kids never have anywhere to go and they shoot this down... Sure I think the Sunnyland plaza is a great place for the kids in Sunnyland and Washington and perhaps East Peoria--but we still need these clubs in Peoria!!

kids need a place to hang out. What happened to Stage 2? It was always packed and great place to meet friends and hang out. I think teens need a place to go.

What are most teens around Peoria gonna do when they have been at school all week and want to have fun? I mean that is all they are really trying to d is have a place where teens can have fun after a long week of school and just hang out with their friends. My friends and I love to hang otu with each other but sometimes you just need to get out and have fun once in a while. Just think finally a dance club just for teens is getting ready to get ready to open and we can't open.

Kids always need some place to hang out. Have they looked in sunnyland-washington ? Sunnyland plaza has a lot of empty spaces and it would be close to the movies. Part of the old k-mart is still empty in washington.
