Pontiac High School teachers and students are recognized as environmental heroes today.

Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn honored the school for its prescription drug disposal plan.

Paul Ritter's Ecology class researched the effects of dumping medicine in the trash or down the toilet and discovered traces of the drugs were getting in our drinking water and waterways.

The class teamed up with pharmacies in Pontiac to help make drug disposal easy and safe.

Senior Danielle McMillan said, "We are all stewards of the Earth. And that if we can take back these drugs and if we can encourage people to start doing something good for the Earth that we can all have a safer future."

Pontiac students hope other schools will develop a similar project with their pharmacies.
