Protesting the Air Show with Kites

By Syreeta Baker

The Prairie Air Show isn't getting rave reviews from everybody.
Peoria Area Peace network members boycotted the air show out of what they say is a matter of respect for the skies.

In West Peoria Members of the Peoria Area Peace Network chose to fly kites in the sky... as their way of protesting the Prairie Air show.

"The kids love it the grown ups love it, but it's a massive waste," says Jack Ryan.

Peace activist Tonya Sneed agrees.
But Sneed's main issue is what she says the planes at the air show represent.
"To us maybe they represent entertainment to Americans but to many people in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan they represent terror."

Outdoor educator Dominica Rogers says the air show is not about politics.
It's an event where the average person can get a closer look at the planes and a better perspective on the men and women who defend this country.
"Enjoying this and see how the planes fly is very educational and to restrict that just because of pollution in the skies in my eyes it's not very good."

The air show has been a "must-see" for area residents like Peter Loncke. One main reason is because Loncke's a Master Sergeant in the Belgium Air Force.
"It's always great to see the planes close.
Even after 37 years of service it's still great I would stay forever. I love the old airplanes."
"This shows what goes on with the military and how they work.
I think its actually good for people to see that," says Dominica Rogers.

While the air show will continue with its tradition of fire shooting trucks and their death defying stunts...The Peoria Area Peace Network is starting a kite flying tradition of its own.

My sunday almost completed without a snag. I was completed distracted by the airshow, not worrying about the economy, war, food and fuel prices, nothing. It was a day of bliss, till I came home and saw and read about the protest. Our military works hard to preserve our rights and freedoms, even going as far as to give up their free time to come entertain us civilians at the airshows. I just hope they didn't read this article. Thanks for being the raincloud in my sunny day.

Vehicles in Iraq are blowing up because of these bombers wanting to kill people, you going to protest vehicles too????? We lost about 3,500 people in the Twin Towers, Pentagon and the other flight that crashed, need I say more?? So lets sit here and take this so we can be hit again??? The War Is About FREEDOM!!! Something I love this country for!

As the announcer for the show I shared the following reading during the Air Force Heritage Flight: "It is the soldier, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag who gives the protester the right to burn the flag."

Podeycat: The errors here are few & far between, and certainly not something one can't comprehend. I don't appreciate you calling out other people on their spelling or grammar. My son has a learning disability and will struggle his whole life. It's not about his lack of education or his intelligence. Believe it or not, all of us make mistakes, including you. I think you might want to educate yourself on sensitivity. That said, God Bless our troops and I love the air show.

I would just like to say that this is an incredibly huge insult for our men and women in the military. What a slap in the face.

I won't comment on the issue of protesting the military-industrial complex in this country or on the pollution and waste of fuel associated with the glory-of-war celebration at the airport. It's obvious that would be a waste of time. However, perhaps some of the people commenting here should take advantage of educational freedom by learning to construct a grammatically correct and properly spelled sentence. It's hard to take anything seriously when it is written at the third-grade level.

I support the airshow and my heartfelt thanks go out to the pilots and crew for all of their work. To those in protest: just don't go to the show...it's that simple. I think you need to educate yourself on a few worldly matters. Better yet, why don't you try for just one day to do something for the country you are so freely living in. What have YOU done lately???

People need to wake up... I am proud that I was born and raised in this Great "FREE" Country.. I am personally greatful to those that have layed down their lives and the spouses and children that have supported their family members. Protesting is nothing more than a smack in the face to our military personell. Yes, this is for our entertainment, but it is also a chance to let those involved to demonstrate and get recognition for the skills and sacrifices they've made for our Country!

"To us maybe they represent entertainment to Americans but to many people in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan they represent terror." As if Americans haven't been subjected to terror...even in recent history? Since when is defending your country the wrong thing to do? Would you not defend your family?

to the members of the peace society: Instead of flying kites you should of been supporting our airshow. This show has demonstrated to the thousands of people who don't know what it means to serve in a combat crisis zone these men and women have defended our country for years making it what it is today be glad you live n a country where there is freedom and piece. A country where you are not forced to join the military, and possibly loose your life to fight for others. This show will pay tribute

TO: West Peoria Members of the Peoria Area Peace Network For thirty years I served in the United States Military and in that time I, my bothers and sisters were Instruments of Policy we are the defenders of the Constitution. All of the Constitution not just the parts that we chose to support. I defend your right to fly your kites and stand on street corners but do not perceive that I will support your views and above all do not hinder my passage.
