Retiring Congressman Ray LaHood says he was not surprised Sheldon Schafer is running as the Green Party candidate for the 18th Congressional seat LaHood is vacating. But, LaHood says he's not sure Schafer has a chance against the other contenders vying for the office.

"I think it's doubtful that a Green Party candidate will do well in Central Illinois because after all the Republican nominee Aaron Schock got 72%of the vote in the primary. And now, the democrats have supported a substantial candidate in Coleen Callahan. But look, this is their opportunity in an open seat to have a chance to stand on a platform," LaHood, a Republican says.

Schafer is an astronomer and educator in the River City.

The fact that LaHood felt obligated to suggest that Schafer is a long shot only shows that Schafer actually has a pretty good shot in this race.

Wow, a Republican received 72% in a Republican primary where the majority of participants were Republicans? Great analysis Congressman. That has nothing to do with how a candidate who wants to sell nuclear arms will appeal to the general populace. I think Peoria will be receptive to a progressive voice, and Schafer seems like a breath of fresh air. Best of luck.
