Bartonville Starts Drug Enforcement Zone

By Emily West

The Village of Bartonville is taking a proactive step to stop drug problems in the area before they start.

The Police Chief announced today officers will start running drug enforcement zones, much like seatbelt enforcement.

The zones will be set up at various locations through out the village.

The chief of police says he hopes the patrols will deter drugs coming into the area.

Chief Brian Fengel said, "We know there's a lot of traffic traveling through the Village of Bartonville. Approximately 50 thousand vehicles travel through here per day. When we get calls of drug use, houses selling drugs, we kind of want to target that area and get it cleaned up before it gets started."

The officers who are organizing the drug zones will be assisted by the department's K-9 unit.

Village of Bartonville Board members agreed to pay officers overtime for the work.

What does "drug enforcement zone" mean? Are cops going to start pulling people over for no reason or setting up checkpoints and demanding that you let them search your car for drugs? I can't imagine the logic that people must go through to make that sound ok.

How about you spend it on the horrible roads. I can think of one particular drive that is not even paved. Police are almost afraid to go up it.

Wonderful... Let's spend more tax payer money on a failed drug war. How about this, instead of the millions spent on keeping drugs out of our community, why don't we spend that money on prevention and treatment?
