Relatives Say Suspect And Victim Were Friends

A shooting in Peoria destroys the bond between two best friends. The victim, 18-year-old Howard Scott is dead and his buddy is in police custody tonight.

Howard Scott's father says his son called him at 7:30 last night to tell him that he was going to his best friends house. He says what looks like horseplay turned into a fatal tragedy.

About a half hour after that phone call, Peoria Police found Howard Scott lying in the yard at 1815 West Daytona. Some residents who've lived in the north Peoria neighborhood say shootings don't happen in the typically quiet community.

Barb Gordon said, "I was shocked, I was surprised. Is this any reason for you to be overly concerned? No I don't think so. I think it's just an isolated incident."

Peoria police arrested 18-year-old Michael Howard, who lives at the Daytona address. One resident describes him as a polite kid, who hung around the neighborhood with his friends.

Another neighbor Maggie Berres says she thinks it was an isolated incident.

Berres said, "Because there was a gun involved I'm concerned about it. But that can happen in any neighborhood, at any time, any school, anyplace. No I'll still act the same and do the same and tell my kids to just be careful."

Michael Johnstone just moved into the neighborhood and said, "I called my fiancee and let her know. She wasn't too thrilled. It's one of those things that just you know..I'm glad it didn't happen to anybody that we know. It's an unfortunate situation. It can happen anywhere."

Police say they did recover the weapon allegedly used in the shooting.

The police have kept pretty quiet about this case, but Howard is in the Peoria County jail facing first degree murder charges. He is expected in court tomorrow.

Scott's father says he warned his son about hanging around Howard because he described him as a bad influence.

Come on now...from what im hearing, its seems as if many ppl are are glad that it happened to Howard and not anyone else...Its not right to wish death upon anyone so to all who made it very clear that these kids were thugs and punks...just grow up. This is a serious matter and it doesnt seem as if its being taken seriously. A young man has been killed and anothers freedom is in jeapardy. It doesnt matter if they were black or white. Humans are humans..show some sympathy. RIP Howard Scott Jr.

Thankfully I've moved out of the neighborhood. It was just a matter of time for this particular young man to get caught hurting someone. These were not "good" young men. These were immature thugs always causing minor trouble and just a matter of time before it turned into major trouble! I called the police several times on this group of thugs. I always assumed they'd hurt an innocent bystander. I know this is sad to say. I am sorry for both families. They've both lost sons!

My prayers are with Ms. Scott's family and friends, but I find it hard to feel sorry for Michael Howard. He took a precious human life. I pray that the Scott family gets the justice that both they and Howard deserve.

Anyone who points a gun at someones head and shoots it should be locked up for life. Hopefully they won't be hanging around our St Philomena area to cause trouble. If they do we will move out of the area.

It amazing how Anger consumes peoples way of thinking, everyone judging and saying what needs to be done or what should've been done after the fact, It's not a Race issue but lets be real, if the Bradley issue dealt with Black Students it would've been treated differently, if this shooting occurred on the south side it's looked at like thats just a normal day and expected in that community, but in a good community like Rolling Acres now it's a tragedy. Prayers to both Howard and Michael Families

Sorry, but if you are 18 or even 15 you do not need to be standing on corners, blocking streets, and mixing in guns, that is just asking for trouble and is not a constructive way to spend your time. Why is it most of the kids on this cannot even spell much less right a complete sentence and they are in high school? It is a disgrace and I tired of the violence and ignorance ruining our city. Start taking accountability for your actions instead of making lame excuses and using the race card.

Howards mom wants to let everyone know the truth.THE TRADEGY WAS NOT ACCIDENTAL.The suspect pulled the gun out twice and he finally shot the second time.He knew what he was doing and he is not pysco or crazy.Mrs. Scott wants the truth out so that this tradegy will not occur again for anyone. They both were old enough to know not to play with a gun and especailly not to play around with one with your so called best friend. And then he dragged Howard out to his front yard to die.

Ok to compare this to the tragedy of the boy getting pushed by his friend into traffic is ridiculous. It is not at all the same thing. To have a gun at all is stupid and to have it out messing with it is just ignorant. All guns should be treated as if they are loaded at all times, so I do not feel sorry for the guy in jail, I do feel bad for the family of the deceased. Good kids or not what were they doing with a gun in the first place.

whtie, black, red, purple. It does not matter what color- that is such a diversion from the real issue--young people are dying for absolutely no reason. That white kid at Bradley should be charged with murder too.I just find this whole thing so sad. Young people who do not get a chance to live out their lives in peace. What happened to human dignity?

Putting a gun to someones head at point blank range and pulling the trigger, an accident!!! Come on people! Race has nothing to do with it. I live in the neighborhood too and those kids are punks!!! I'm sick of it and thinking of moving. I feel very bad for the victim, and dragging him out of the house to die in the neighbor's yard. Some best friend.

what because kids are standing on a street corner hanging out they are automatically punks what else does these kids have to do in this day and age it is always easier to point the finger at someone else what about the kid that pushed his friend into trafic and was killed oh that charge is manslaughter what was their race? thats what i thought all i can say is if u cant c through ur own back yard dont judge ur neighbors

Let's face it, the cops are never around until something happens and then all of a sudden they're gonna step up patrols. Way to go blue. I live in this neighborhood too and they never moved for oncoming traffic just stood there taking up the whole road. I've heard that they were good kids but going through someone else's mailbox isn't innocent. Try to find a hobby, one that doesn't include loaded weapons. Avoidable event, will see who's next I guess.
