Suit Forces Chicago School District To End Moments Of Silence

By Mike Dimmick

Illinois' newly-enacted moment of silence in schools has hit the courts. The response was not silence.

A federal judge in Chicago today orders the state schools chief not to enforce the new law.

Atheist activist Rob Sherman challenged the moment of silence order in his daughter's suburban Chicago school district.

For now, Rob Sherman's daughter's school district is the only one in the state with an injunction barring the moment of silence.

All other Illinois school districts can make their own decisions. The state superintendent, however, cannot actively enforce the law.

But a statewide injunction in the next week or so is possible.
