Our objective is to provide the best orthodontic care for our patients so you can enjoy improved oral health and a beautiful smile throughout your life. Your care with Dr. DeGise begins with a comprehensive dental exam and a complete orthodontic diagnostic workup. It includes digital facial and dental photographs, study models of the teeth (when needed) and digital panoramic and cephalometric x-rays, which use significantly less radiation than traditional film x-rays. All of this provides the information needed for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. Once your initial exam and diagnostic records are completed, a customized orthodontic treatment plan will be presented. We are treating children and adults in our Peoria and Canton offices. Frequently Asked Questions
- How old do you have to be to get started?
- Orthodontic treatment can be started as early as age 7. On certain types of tooth problems before all permanent teeth have erupted teeth may appear to be straight but there could be a problem that only an Orthodontist can detect. Early treatment, can begin after the four permanent upper and lower front teeth have erupted. Dr. Brian DeGise may identify a developing problem but recommend monitoring the child’s growth and development, and then, if indicated, begin treatment at the appropriate time for the child. Some cases will benefit greatly from early treatment. Early treatment may prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing that in some cases an orthodontist are not able to achieve results that may not have been possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
- How much do braces cost?
- Cost depends on the type and severity of the dental problem, and a specific treatment plan is created to determine the type and length of treatment which will determine the cost
- How long will treatment take and is there different phases?
- We will review the treatment phases with you and point out the advantages and disadvantages of pursuing a 2-phase program or a full phase program. Orthodontic Treatment can be completed in one full-length treatment or broken into two separate treatment phases with a maintenance phase between the two. Please keep in my mind that treatment times depend on several factors. A typical orthodontic case treatment length would be around 2 years depending on patience compliance and cooperation.
- What if there is a wire poking or my mouth is sore and hurts?
- If the wire is sticking out and not bothering you just leave in place and call the office or for comfort you can try tucking it in with the eraser part of a pencil. If that doesn’t work, dry it with a napkin and place wax over the tip of the wire to prevent further irritation. Wax can also be applied to anything which is causing discomfort. To relieve soreness you can rinse your mouth with warm salt water and/or take Advil or Tylenol as directed.
- What can I do to insure the success of my orthodontics treatment?
- Follow all instructions provided by Dr. DeGise and Staff
- Keep your braces and other appliances spotlessly clean
- Wear elastics (rubber bands) as required Keep appointments and regular dental visits
- Keep your teeth clean by brushing and flossing as required
- Maintain a healthy diet—Including very sticking, hard, and very chewy foods (Even though braces and wires are metal, they are fragile and can be damaged by eating the wrong foods, thus taking longer to finish treatment.)
- Keep appointments and regular dental visits
