There is a new English style pub open for business on Peoria's North end.
Eric Shangraw checks out the Fox Pub and Cafe in this week's You Gotta Eat.
The Fox Pub and Cafe is designed after a traditional English eatery.
The owner, Mike Cheeseman, is a Brit. He named it after his parents favorite pub back home.
"We like the location. We just thought there was a good opportunity here. And we have family members now to help. Our son is that much older and wants to be in the business. So we just thought it would be a good fit for us," said Cheeseman.
An authentic red coat was eating at The Fox when we showed up, and gave her official endorsement.
"I think he's got it spot on. I mean obviously the guy is English. His wife has been here for a while. The food is brilliant!" said Adie Hill.
The menu is filled with fun names like the Big Ben, Jack the Ripper, and The Tower of London. Those are all variations of the all-American hamburger.
Photographer Larry Foulk and I started with the Nacho Cheeseman.
Nachos loaded with homemade chili and fresh chips. -Not chips out of a bag. Very good! I ordered the Duke of Wellington. This is brisket, slow cooked for ten hours, with cheddar cheese and horseradish sauce.
Larry had The Memphis. Brisket loaded with a homemade creamy coleslaw and barbecue sauce. The meat is perfectly seasoned and the french fries will please even the most finicky 14-year old.
They cut the spuds fresh here, blanch them for a hot minute, put them in the freezer and fry them again before they're served. The fries are so good, they don't really need ketchup.
With drinks our bill; $29.43 plus tip.
The Fox is worthy of anyone who's chasing good grub.
The Fox Pub and Cafe is in the Parkway Plaza off of Pioneer Parkway.
