Mr. D's

By Eric Shangraw

Today's warm weather had the dining duo looking for a place to eat outside.
They found it in Danvers.
Eric Shangraw is having lunch at Mr. D's.

Mr. D's is a destination for dinner, dessert or a busybody with an appetite.

"It is a meeting place for anybody. They come in here and talk about other people," said owner Ginger Deavers with a chuckle.

The chatter is minimal between owners Ginger and Art Deavers.

"We get along pretty good," quips Art.

They have to get along. They live and work together 24–7 and elbowroom in their clean kitchen is hard to come by.
Mr. D's walls are a Danvers history lesson in black and white. The P and E or Peoria and Eastern railroad used to run through town along with the Inter–Urban.

At the half door where you order, I went with an Italian beef sandwich. They blanket the tender beef with loads of mozzarella and send it through a toaster.

Photographer Warren Brenniger ordered the think crust pizza with custom toppings.

"I got pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers," said Warren while pointing to the menu items on the wall.

He also added Italian beef to his 12–inch pizza. We took our grub to the outdoor dining area and dived in. My onion rings and coleslaw are nothing to gossip about. But the Italian beef under all that cheese is something to cheer for. Warren gives Mr. D an "A" for pizza–pie and extra credit for a quality crunch factor.
Our bill with drinks, $18.60.

"You can drive by here most any night and see somebody you know," said customer Jeanne Pierce while enjoying ice cream with her daughter after school.

And if you don't stop, they may be talking about you, while enjoying some soft serve ice cream.

Mr. D's is open year round, six days a week.
They are closed on Sundays.
