A restaurant in little Banner, Illinois is drawing a crowd from miles away.
Eric Shangraw shows you what all the fuss is about at Cracklin' Jake's Restaurant in this week's You Gotta Eat.

Cracklin Jake's Fine Food and Spirits looks like a wilderness restaurant on the north side of Route–24 in Banner. Hunting trophies are mounted on the walls. –But no wild game on the menu. Cracklin Jake's is truly fine dining in Fulton County. Canton resident Ari Lleshi and his brother partnered with the buildings' owner, Bud Grieves, to try and entice the locals from going all the way to Peoria for a first class meal.

We do have a Bison Stroganoff on the menu to add to the atmosphere. The menu is very traditional. All the items are made from scratch. Homemade, said Ari Lleshi.

Photographer Doug Smith and I started with onion rings. –Thinly sliced, lightly battered served on a bed of lettuce. Good onion ring presentation, if there is such a thing. I sampled the Red Pepper Gouda Soup. It has a nice balance of competing tomato and cheese flavors... Gouda can overpower the palate. Not a problem here. Doug ordered the "Cracklin" best seller: Fried Chicken marinated for 24–hours before its' cooked. Doug is rumored to use ketchup on his chicken. He didn't feel the need to embarrass me with any tomato–based antics in Banner. I had Jambalaya. They use a traditional Louisiana recipe with Andouille sausage, jumbo shrimp and a sprinkle of cayenne pepper. –This is an authentic Creole creation. Our bill: $38.61 plus tip. They tempted us with a bread pudding. It comes from a 100–year old recipe and includes a splash of bourbon.
Our next bramble to Banner will include a stop at Cracklin Jake's just for dessert.

Cracklin Jake's serves dinner Tuesday through Thursday. 4pm-close.
–Both lunch and dinner Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11am-close.

Ordered Shrimp Scampi and was served Shrimp Alfredo. Quite a difference. Think the chef needs a new cookbook. Won't go back.

just came back from "jakes". the shrimp scampi we were supposed to have was like shrimp (tiny) in an el fredo sauce served over spagetti noodles - not a hint of garlicy flavor. very disappointed - no longer on our "must go t" list. One mohito was $8,00 whew

We were down to the restaurant last night and they were busy! The food was great! We had the best service I have had in a long time. This restaurant had come a long way since the last time I was there last November. I asked the waitress if they were busy during the week and she said no. I think my family and I will go back during the week when they aren’t so busy. I suggest that you give it another shot! Much better this time around.

My first visit in December wasn't so great, but I just went back yesterday. It was great. You won't find many restaurants in Fulton County that use free range chicken for their fried chicken. This chicken isn't injected with growth hormones like the more common stuff. My girlfriend had the Ribeye steak, prepared medium, and she loved it. Try the mojito too! I'm glad I gave it a second chance.

I have recently visted Cracklin Jakes and was very pleased with my visit. I was informed that they were under new management and that any problems or concerns were going to be handled differently. I look forward to my next visit. I will return soon.

Great food served piping hot in a place with cozy ambiance. The fried chicken and blackberry cobbler are wonderful! Great place for a romantic date or family gathering!

I'm 6'2" and 240 lbs. I aint looking for ambience! My wife and I took some friends out to dinner last week-end at said Resturant. I also had the chicken and the crust was very thick and overdone! The other parties food was eithr over cooked or not as ordered! Sounds like I may head down the road and check out Liverpool!

At $12.00 for reg chicken vrs $8.00 for All white chicken they better have a better ambience and menue selection. I may live in Fulton Co but I have eaten in some of the finer Resturants in this Great Nation and this place is overpriced and Over rated! No! I am not related nor connected to the folks in Liverpool I am just stating plain fact's...The food is MUCH better and MUCH cheaper.

We've been to Cracklin Jakes a few times and the food and service has always been great! As for the person who suggested the restaurant in Liverpool this one has a far nicer ambience and menu selection.

Good experience on first visit. Second time took friends along. Our friend had prime rib medium-rare and it was served medium-well on a CHILLED plate. Waitress took it back and said the kitchen said it WAS medium-rare, but it was too dark in there for us to see that, and brought it back with no changes. The bill on a $14 prime rib was adjusted by taking $3 off. Since when does the kitchen tell a customer they are wrong and just can't see the meat correctly?? We were very disappointed!

Went to Cracklin Jakes for the first time last week end. Long wait and the food got a 50/50 rating. I got the fried chicken...over done and the Onion rings were underdone. My wifes salmon was very good altho a bit on the tiny size. Service was fair, $12.00 for fried chichen is a bit steep...Try the resturant in Liverpool if you what really fantistic chicken.

recently went to Cracklin Jakes for supper. My friends steak was cold when served and mine was not cooked as ordered. I ordered my steak well done and it was very red in the middle when it was served to me. Probably will not go back.

My family(not myself)have been to Cracklin Jakes several months ago and had good reviews on the food and size portions as well. Pretty good stuff according to them!
