You Gotta Eat: Destihl Restaurant and Brew Works

By WEEK Producer

A new Micro Brewery in Normal is offering gourmet food with its' hops and barley.

Eric Shangraw goes for lunch at Destihl Restaurant and Brew Works in this week's You Gotta Eat.

Destihl Restaurant and Brew Works is at the Shoppes at College Hills. It's a brand new restaurant and concept. Owner and Brewmaster Matt Potts left his little brewery in Elmwood to go all out in Normal.... The interior décor described as "Metro Industrial."

We like to incorporate the structure of the building with the design. We've also incorporated some metro feel as well, through the use of complex ceiling work and interior design.

The decorative wood, tile and steel complete with rivets mesh to make an elegant interior. Adjacent to the bar is the brewery... now churning out about 70 kegs of various beers a week. Micro brews are typically known for good suds... not necessarily good entrées. But Destihl is dashing that stereotype.

I'm having the seared salmon. And it is fabulous. I just said to my wife she should figure out how to make this so we can enjoy it at home.

Guest eater and photographer Warren Brinegar and I started with a sample of different beers. The German Wheat has a banana and clove taste. The Redbird is an American style Ale. And the Oatmeal Espresso Stout is thick and bold with a strong coffee taste. –Interesting and fun to talk about. –Now to the food. The Mac and Cheese on the menu is not for your eight–year old. This is Green Chile Mac and Cheese.. an infusion of green chillies, black beans, tossed in a spicy bean sauce... it's Mac and Cheese with a sophisticated kick. Warren had the Flat Iron Steak. –A perfect ten for presentation. Warren loved the crumbled blue cheese on the potatoes and Asparagus drowning in a chimichuri sauce. (Like a pesto sauce) Gourmet does not translate into small portions at Destihl. They tried to tempt us with gourmet desserts. With no room to indulge, we declined. Our bill 28–dollars plus tip. We'll return to Destihl with a designated driver so we can do more than just sip the micro brew samples. Eric Shangraw News 25.
