Do I need a passport?

The final phase of passport requirements will be implemented on June 1, 2009. At that time, all US citizens will need to present a passport to travel anywhere outside of the 50 United States. Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security tightened restrictions to ensure travelers presented valid documents including birth certificates and photo ID. This final initiative takes it one step further.

The only exception that will be made are for cruise voyages that begin and end at the same US port. Passengers on these cruises must show proof of citizenship (certified copy of birth certificate and government-issued photo ID). However, travelers may still be required to present a passport when docking at a foreign port, depending on the islands or countries the cruise ship is visiting. If there would be an emergency that necessitated your flying back to the US, a valid passport would be required.

Will I have to pay to check a suitcase?

Most airlines are currently charging for checked luggage. Unfortunately, the baggage policy varies by airline, frequent flyer status, booking class, bag size and weight. Fees may apply if (1) you plan to check a bag or (2) you plan to carry sports equipment or an odd-shaped item or (3) your bag exceeds airline weight limits. For the most current information, we suggest checking your airline’s web site.

What are VAT taxes?

VAT (Value Added Tax) are European sales taxes. Unlike in the US, where sales tax is typically a state-by-state percentage that is added on at the cash register, in Europe the sales tax is included in the price tag. Non E.U. residents technically do not owe these taxes, so there is a system to refund them. Getting the VAT refund used to involve several steps including filling out numerous forms and paperwork and presenting your items at Customs prior to your flight home.

There are an easy way to get this accomplished. Many shops are now part of the “Tax Free Shopping” network (identified by a sticker in store windows). These shops issued a check along with your invoice. After you have the invoice stamped at Customs, you can redeem the check for cash directly at the Tax Free booth (usually located near Customs).

What can I carry on?

Travelers are allowed to carry travel-size toiletries (3 ounce or less) that fit comfortably in ONE quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag through security checkpoints. Travelers may also bring items, including beverages, purchased in the secure, boarding area on-board the aircraft. TSA will be enhancing security measures throughout the airport environment, both visible and not visible to the traveling public. Examples of these measures include: more random screening of employees, additional canine patrols, stronger air cargo security measures, more rigorous identity verification standards and deploying more trained security officers in bomb appraisal and screening by observation techniques.

Should I buy travel insurance?

We highly recommend purchasing insurance. If something is going to happen it will be just before you are to leave and you do not want to loose all your money. If something happens while you are on vacation medical care can be quite costly. Being air lifted back to the US can be astronomical! Buy the insurance and save the anxiety.
