Central Illinois cancer patients now have a second location to access one of the world's most advanced cancer treatment systems.

The new facility, at Midwest Urological Center at 7309 North Knoxville, is a joint venture with Methodist Medical Center. The focus there will be on treating prostate cancer patients using something called Tomotherapy.

News 25's Lee Ranson was one of the first local prostate cancer patients to receive this state of the art care.

"It's the same machine that cured me of cancer when I was down at the oncology unit of Methodist Medical Center," said Ranson. "The Tomotherapy machine is state of the art. And it's so wonderful because it's right here in Peoria."

Dr. Joseph Banno, who works at Midwest Urological Center, says the new technology is less harsh on the body.

"There's a CT picture that's taken before each treatment and that redirects the beam just to the prostate," said Dr. Banno. "There's less scatter of radiation. What I like about it is there's less bladder injury. There's less bowel injury."

There are only 250 Tomotherapy systems worldwide. A spokesman for Methodist Medical Center says that 1 in 3 men over 60 experience some form of prostate cancer.
